High Power Program
The Coeur d’Alene Rifle and Pistol Club maintains an active high power rifle program. We hold a match once a month year-round on the public 100-yard range with reduced targets. The matches are held on the first Saturday of each month unless it is a holiday weekend; then it is scheduled on Sunday of the following weekend. Check the calendar page on our web site for exact dates. The annual schedule is also posted at the outdoor range. The firearms used by high power competitors can be any safe center fire rifle. Some matches require a magazine/stripper clip change in rapid fire, and some matches require iron sights and some allow optical sights. Each match has an advance match notice that specifies the requirements of each particular match. The requirements for each type of match can be obtained by contacting Wayne Schoonmaker at 208-682-3045 or email at wayne@schoonmakercpa.com. We welcome new shooters who may be interested in trying out high power rifle, and we provide any training needed to get started.
Throughout the year we shoot the following six courses of fire:
(1) NRA National Match Course sanctiond by the National Rifle Association (NRA). This is an iron sight 50-shot match (500 aggregate) shot in 4 stages, in the following sequence: 10 rounds slow fire in the standing position, one 10-round string of rapid fire shot in the prone position (70 seconds), one 10-round string of rapid fire shot in the sitting posi- tion (60 seconds), and 20 rounds slow fire in the prone position.
(2) Offhand Match, held in January and February of each year. This is an iron sight match, and the course of file consists of 60 rounds shot slow fire, in 3 20-round segments, all in the offhand position.
(3) CMP John C. Garand Match sanctioned by the Civilian Marksman- ship Program (CMP). This is an iron sight 50-shot match in which all competitors shoot stock M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, or vintage Springfield 1903 rifles. The course of fire consists of 20 rounds slow fire in the prone position, 10 rounds rapid fire in the prone position (80 seconds), 10 rounds rapid fire in the sitting position (70 seconds), and 10 rounds slow fire in the standing position.
(4) Sporting Rifle Match (modi- fied). This is an any-match and consists of a total of 32 rounds, shot in the follow-
ing sequence: 8 rounds slow fire in the prone position, two strings of rapid fire in the prone position of 4 rounds each, in 30 seconds; two strings of rapid fire in the sitting position of 4 rounds each, in 30 seconds; 8 rounds slow fire in the standing position.
(5) Self Esteem Match. This is an iron sight fun match consist- ing of 50 rounds shot according to the same rules as the NRA 50-shot National Match Course. The self-esteem part results from using full size 200 yard targets instead of 200 yard targets reduced to 100 yards. Impressive scores result!
(6) Any Sight Match Rifle/Tactical Rifle Match. This is a new match starting in 2011 and shot with the same rules as the 50-shot National Match Course with the exception that optical sights are permitted (optional)..
